A word from the Head… Toby Spence
My name is Toby Spence and it is my pleasure to extend a very warm welcome to Wrekin College. Thank you for taking the time to get to know us better and I hope that, like many others before you, you will soon discover what makes Wrekin a special place to be; the ‘Wrekin difference’. If you are looking for a school that offers a warm welcome, a broad curriculum, a formidable academic reputation, a huge breadth of extra-curricular opportunities, and the chance to discover the very best version of yourself, you have come to the right place.
Wrekin is a truly special place to live, work and be educated. My family and I felt the special atmosphere straight away, and I hope you do too. Wrekinians simply have something special about them, and that only comes from the strength and confidence derived from a supportive community where ‘having a go’ and living adventurously is always applauded.
Our aim is to encourage happy and confident pupils who can think for themselves, have a good moral compass and a wide range of skills with which they will shape their futures. Based within a well-established pastoral system we offer a rich academic curriculum alongside a remarkable range of extra-curricular activities with an enviable reputation in music, sport and outdoor education.
Our pastoral care is the unbreakable thread, both visible and invisible, that joins every aspect of Wrekin College together. From tutors to Houseparents, peer supporters to teachers, our pastoral care is the safety net and support network that helps our pupils to thrive in an ever-changing and sometimes challenging world.
Our broad curriculum allows our pupils to find a pathway that is individual to them. Our classes are small and our teachers are experienced, expert and approachable. Tutors mean each pupil has personalised academic and pastoral support. Our learning support staff can help those with additional needs, and our enrichment programme stimulates and stretches our more able students.
We are proud of our pupils and all of their achievements. We are a non-selective school and we place absolute importance upon ‘value-added’ – which equates to the progress that a pupil makes during their time with us. To this end, we are proud of our 2023 exam results.
However, a school should not just be a place where you exist behind a desk, only striving for the next exam. School should be exciting, challenging and welcoming. Pupils should have the opportunity to try a plethora of new things, to be unafraid to ‘have a go’, to fail occasionally as part of that journey, and to find and share their strengths while sharing in the joy of others’ successes and achievements.
Wrekin’s superb extra-curricular provision is designed to allow our pupils to do all these things. Opportunities are everywhere at Wrekin. Our reputation for sport and music stretches across the globe and is something we are very proud of. The huge array of sports and activities begins from Year 7 and as they move up the school they discover new challenges in our adventurous programme and through the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. Charity and service are embedded into the school, and we have an unrivalled range of overseas travel opportunities both through tours and trips as well as through our established international exchange programme. Debating is another great Wrekin strength, and the junior and senior competitions are hotly contested each year.
Our range of co-curricular activities work hand in hand with our ‘Employability’ curriculum to help our pupils not only to find their future but forge their own. Employability permeates everything we do at Wrekin, from the first day to long after pupils leave and become part of the Old Wrekinian Association. If exam results open the door, employability enables you to walk through it, teaches you what to do on the other side, and how to create new doors for others to follow.
In this ever-changing world, everyone at Wrekin College aspires to give every pupil not just an outstanding and holistic education, but the confidence to thrive in life at and beyond school, as citizens who contribute to a global community and make their own mark. We would be delighted if you choose to visit us and discover the Wrekin difference for yourself.
Our Ethos
Founded in 1880 by Sir John Bayley, the school still works to his original philosophy of providing individual attention to individual pupils. Wrekin College is: a school which provides a holistic education, adding value to the lives of every pupil; a school which every child believes is ‘their school’, and where every child has an equal chance to contribute; a school that is forward-thinking whilst being proud of its traditions; a school where pupils understand that a first-rate education is a privilege, and one they have a duty to live up to; a school that challenges every pupil to be the best version of themselves academically and in all other ways; a school that is inclusive and where different types of people want to know and accept each other and a school that takes seriously its commitment to prepare pupils for life beyond the classroom as well as our role in a local and global community.
